About Me
My name is John Downey, and I am a Health and Physical Education teacher, Driver’s Education instructor, and Cross Country & Track coach. My work centers on helping students and athletes build skills that support lifelong wellness, physically, emotionally, and behaviorally.
In addition to teaching, I am completing my Master of Science in Health Education & Behavior at the University of Florida. This degree has strengthened my understanding of health communication, behavior change theory, evaluation methods, and social marketing strategies. Through this program, I have developed a deeper ability to evaluate health messages, design targeted interventions, and create communication materials that resonate with specific audiences.
My full Social Marketing in Health Education philosophy is included on the Philosophy page of this portfolio.
Professional Development and Experience
Throughout my graduate coursework, I have gained experience in:
Social marketing and health behavior strategies

Program evaluation and data interpretation
Inclusive health education
Developing accessible and culturally sensitive materials
As a teacher and coach, I apply these principles daily. My background includes work in performance training and youth development, student safety initiatives, and programs promoting student wellness. These experiences shape how I teach: clear expectations, practical strategies, and a steady focus on students’ well-being.
Social Marketing and Design Skills
My coursework in Social Marketing & Health has helped me build skills in:
Designing behavior-focused messages
Using audience segmentation to tailor communication
Applying theory-based strategies to real-world health issues
Developing visual health education materials
Writing and structuring persuasive, health-focused content
Creating accessible designs that support learning
These skills, combined with my teaching and coaching experience, strengthen my ability to support students and communities through effective health communication.
